Gaat lekker, mooie marges:

The CEO of the world's largest oil company says crude prices will remain steady and will not change dramatically in the months to come.

In an interview at the annual IHS CERA conference in Houston, Saudi Aramco CEO Khalid Al-Falih said, "The price range that we have seen recently—$70 to $80 (a barrel)—I believe has been supportive of new investment."

March 12 (Bloomberg) -- The International Energy Agency raised its forecast for global oil demand this year for a second month as fuel consumption in Asia rises more than expected.

The IEA increased its estimate for world demand in 2010 by 70,000 barrels a day to 86.6 million barrels a day. That would mean a gain of 1.6 million barrels a day, or 1.8 percent, from 2009 levels, it said. Economies outside the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development continue to lead the recovery in consumption, the IEA said.

“Global oil demand resumed growth on a yearly basis in the fourth quarter of 2009 after five consecutive quarters of decline,” the Paris-based agency said in its monthly oil market report today. “This year’s global oil demand growth will be driven entirely by non-OECD countries, with non-OECD Asia alone representing over half of total growth.”

China will account for almost a third of global oil demand growth this year, according to IEA estimates, offsetting stagnant consumption in developed economies, particularly Europe.

March 11 (Bloomberg) -- Exxon Mobil Corp., which pumps more oil than every member of OPEC except Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq, is counting on natural gas to provide the bulk of its future growth.

Exxon, the world’s second-largest company, plans to start 12 new gas and crude projects in the next two years, Mark Albers, a senior vice president at the Irving, Texas-based company, told analysts today in New York. Capital spending on wells, floating platforms, gas-export plants and refineries will rise 3.4 percent this year to $28 billion.

Chief Executive Officer Rex Tillerson is counting on a $28.8 billion acquisition of Fort Worth, Texas-based gas producer XTO Energy Inc. as well as new gas developments from the South Pacific to the Celtic Sea to counter a 6.7 percent drop in output in the past five years.

March 11 (Bloomberg) -- AGL Energy Ltd., Australia’s largest electricity retailer, said it may sell its 50 percent stake in the Moranbah coal-seam gas field in Queensland state should Royal Dutch Shell Plc acquire Arrow Energy Ltd.

Arrow, a partner in the Moranbah field, said on March 8 that Shell and PetroChina Co. jointly offered A$4.45 ($4.06) a share for its Australian coal-seam gas business. AGL may sell its Moranbah holding to Shell if the bid for Arrow succeeds, the Australian Financial Review said today, citing AGL Chief Executive Officer Michael Fraser. The electricity retailer said in its statement that it hasn’t received any offer for the stake.

AGL’s share in the Bowen Basin may be worth about A$1.4 billion, David Leitch, an analyst at UBS AG based in Sydney, said in a March 8 report. Brisbane-based Arrow has a 35 percent stake in the Moranbah project in the basin and is the operator while The Hague-based Shell owns the remaining 15 percent.

LONDON (Dow Jones)--Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSA) said production at its Ormen Lange gas field offshore Norway was interrupted Wednesday after a technical problem.

"Yes, there is an issue, Ormen Lange experienced shutdown March 10 after an outage on the power grid," a Shell spokesman told Dow Jones Newswires. The spokesman said the company has now started the process to resume normal production but that this could take some time to achieve.

Ormen Lange's maximum production capacity is 70 million cubic meters of gas a day. The field is in the More Basin in the southern Norwegian Sea. Gas flows through stage one of the Langeled pipeline--the world's longest subsea gas pipe--to Sleipner, and from there to continental Europe or the U.K.

The Langeled pipeline, which pumps gas from Norway to the U.K, is running at a rate of 62 million cubic meters, according to the National Grid Web Site.

MUMBAI -- India's Essar Oil Ltd. Wednesday said it is still in talks with Royal Dutch Shell PLC to buy three refineries in Europe, dismissing a local media report that the two companies had put the negotiations on the back burner.

"Shell and Essar can confirm that they are still in negotiations around the possible sale and purchase of Shell's three refineries at Stanlow in the U.K., and Heide and Harburg in Germany," Essar spokesman Manish Kedia told Dow Jones Newswires.

Earlier Wednesday, the NDTV Profit television channel said that the talks were on the back burner as Essar Group, the parent of Essar Oil, is planning to raise $2.5 billion to $3 billion by listing a unit on the London Stock Exchange.

The report said exclusive talks between the companies ended in January and Essar may need the permission of its new institutional shareholders to proceed with the deal talks.

"We will not comment on the detail of negotiations, including timelines," Essar said in an emailed statement.

Shell didn't immediately respond to an emailed query.

March 10 (Bloomberg) -- The 2010 Atlantic hurricane season will be more active than last year’s and poses an “above- normal” threat to the U.S. Gulf and East coasts, AccuWeather Inc. forecasters said today.

AccuWeather foresees 16 to 18 named storms forming in the Atlantic Ocean, with five becoming hurricanes and two or three of them going ashore in the U.S. as major systems. In all, 15 storms probably will be in the western Atlantic or the Gulf of Mexico, and seven may make landfall in the U.S., said Joe Bastardi, chief long-range and hurricane forecaster.

“This year has the chance to be an extreme season,” Bastardi said in a statement. “Certainly much more like 2008 than 2009 as far as the overall threat to the United States East and Gulf coasts.”

The Gulf of Mexico is home about 27 percent of U.S. oil and 15 percent of U.S. natural gas production, according to the Department of Energy.

Only nine named storms formed during the 2009 season, the fewest in 12 years, and three of them became hurricanes. Last year was the first time since 2006 that no hurricane hit the U.S. mainland. In 2008, there were 16 named storms, and eight of them were hurricanes.

OPEC verhoogt vooruitzichten olievraag 2010

Timesonline:

Royal Dutch Shell set out to cement its position in Australia’s coal seam gas industry yesterday, joining China’s largest listed oil company in a £2 billion takeover bid for Arrow Energy.

Shell confirmed that it was in talks to buy Arrow, which holds the largest reserves of the fuel in Australia.

If successful, the deal would give Shell and PetroChina direct control over 37 per cent of Australia’s proven coal seam gas reserves — a resource that oil companies believe will be vital in meeting the growing energy demands of China and South-East Asia.

The Brisbane-based Arrow, which holds the production rights to more than 65,000 square kilometres of coal deposits across Queensland, has reserves of coal-seam gas of 6,150 petajoules. Australia’s total proven reserves stood at 16,590 petajoules at the end of 2008.

Beijing loves to paint cooperation with overseas companies as a "win-win" arrangement. The problem, foreign executives say, is that it often means two wins for China.

So has the $2.96 billion offer made by Royal Dutch Shell PLC and PetroChina Co. for Australian coal seam gas producer Arrow Energy Ltd. provided a template for future takeover bids? It's possible, though much will depend on whether the deal finally goes through.

Coal-seam gas—trapped stores of methane hundreds of meters below the Earth's surface—is one of the world's hottest energy plays. Shell has long been viewed by the market as the likely suitor for Arrow, having bought 30% of its Australian coal-seam gas acreage in 2008, so the surprise was that it felt the need to bring China's largest listed oil company on board.

In practice, Shell has good reasons. The Anglo-Dutch oil major is laying off staff to cut costs and is likely to freeze its dividend, so funding an aggressive takeover campaign on its own wouldn't have gone down well internally or with shareholders. Involving PetroChina in a successful bid would also give Shell a customer for its standalone liquefied-natural-gas terminal at Gladstone port in Queensland state or Arrow's proposed Fisherman's Landing project, assuming both go ahead.

China's natural gas needs are increasing as Beijing tries to limit the share of coal and crude oil in the country's energy mix. PetroChina is building LNG receiving terminals along its coastline, with plans to expand them if it can secure supply.

However, Shell's decision to link up with PetroChina isn't without risk. Australia's government and the Foreign Investment Review Board that advises it have both been cautious about approving bids for Australian resources firms by state-controlled companies, including those from China.

LONDON—Royal Dutch Shell PLC said Wednesday it is no longer selling gasoline to Iran, the latest oil company to make such a move during threats of tougher sanctions against the Islamic republic.

"Shell is not currently selling gasoline to Iran," a company spokesman said. He declined to comment on whether it was related to sanctions against Iran.

Shell's move comes as a number of Western oil companies have decided to stop trading with Iran as international pressure bites deeper into its oil and gas industry. Traders Vitol Holding BV and Glencore International AG, historically key fuel-oil suppliers to Iran, recently decided to halt sales of gasoline to the country.

The Islamic republic's refining expansion has been hindered by decades of sanctions, and it depends on imports for about 40% of its refined products consumption
