De benoeming van Jerald Sadoff als Chief Medical Officer bij Crucell kan geniaal genoemd worden. Deze Amerikaan schijnt een autoriteit op vaccingebied te zijn met ook een grote invloed in die wereld. Daardoor zal Crucell zeker hogere ogen gaan gooien bij de verwerving van vaccin-orders.Bovendien zou dit ook weleens de tussenstap kunnen zijn naar de volledige overname door Johnson en Johnson.

NEW YORK (ANP) - De stemming op de Amerikaanse effectenmarkten is woensdag geleidelijk aan verbeterd, gesteund door overnamenieuws en optimisme over de financiële sector. Ook meevallende cijfers over de Amerikaanse groothandelsvoorraden gaven een impuls aan de handel.
Met nog een half uur handel te gaan stond de S&P 500-index 0,5 procent hoger op 1146 punten, terwijl de technologiegraadmeter Nasdaq 0,8 procent klom tot 2359 punten. De Dow-Jonesindex werd wat gedrukt door het zwaarwegende olieconcern Chevron en moest het doen met een plus van 0,2 procent op 10.579 punten.
Farmacieconcern Abbott Laboratories maakte bekend het biotechnologiebedrijf Facet Biotech over te nemen voor 27 dollar per aandeel. Branchegenoot Biogen trok zich in december terug uit de overnamestrijd rond Facet, nadat een lager bod was verworpen. Het aandeel Facet schoot ruim 66 procent omhoog. Abbott noteerde een plus van 0,6 procent.

Lijkt me toch niet verkeerd, Taare, ik doe het ervoor. Wel bestaat de kans dat er meerdere kapers op de kust zijn en er dus bv. meerdere biedingen komen, waardoor er meer in het vat zit.Ik heb wel het idee dat het binnen niet al te lange tijd gaat gebeuren.

NEW YORK, March 9 (Reuters) - Here are the biotechnology companies most likely to be bought in 2010, according to analysts at Morningstar.
In assessing odds of a takeover, Morningstar said it weighed drug portfolio strength, fits with potential partners, profit-boosting power and financial health.
In pursuing acquisitions, product-hungry pharmaceutical companies appear increasingly undeterred by partnerships biotech companies have with rival drugmakers. [ID:nN09215904]
Many on Morningstar's list, including Vertex, Auxilium and Human Genome, have partnerships on their most promising drugs.

Aeras Board of Directors Announces Leadership Transition
President and CEO Steps Down
Jerald C. Sadoff, MD, the President and CEO of the Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation, informed the Board of Directors of his decision to leave Aeras to pursue another opportunity as of March 3, 2010.
The Board of Directors, led by Gordon Douglas, MD, gratefully thanks him for his leadership at Aeras, during which he developed the world's leading portfolio of TB vaccine candidates, built a strong network of development partnerships, and created a world-class vaccine manufacturing infrastructure. The members of the Board of Directors wish him success in his future endeavors.
The Board of Directors has initiated a global search for a new President. In the interim, Dr. Gordon Douglas, Chairman of the Aeras Board of Directors, will serve as Executive Chairman, spending significant time at Aeras headquarters in Rockville, MD. Dr. Douglas is a renowned vaccine expert and was instrumental in conceiving and founding Aeras in 2003. He has been deeply involved in Aeras' leadership and direction as Chairman of the Board from the beginning. This will give him the opportunity to work with staff to best move Aeras forward in its continued mission to develop new tuberculosis vaccines.
Aeras has made great strides in TB vaccine development and the Board of Directors is confident that an Aeras-sponsored TB vaccine will be available for use around the world in the next 10 years.

RATIONALE: AERAS-402 is a novel TB vaccine designed to boost immunity primed by BCG, the only licensed vaccine. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the safety and immunogenicity of AERAS-402 in healthy Mycobacterium tuberculosis uninfected BCG vaccinated adults from a TB endemic region of South Africa. METHODS: Escalating doses of AERAS-402 vaccine were administered intramuscularly to each of 3 groups of healthy South African BCG vaccinated adults, while a 4(th) group received 2 injections of the maximum dose. Participants were followed up for 6 months with all adverse effects documented. Vaccine-induced CD4 and CD8 T cell immunity was characterized by an intracellular cytokine staining assay of whole blood and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs).
MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: AERAS-402 was well tolerated, and no vaccinerelated serious adverse events were recorded. The vaccine induced a robust CD4 T cell response dominated by cells co-expressing IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, and IL-2 ("polyfunctional"cells). AERAS-402 also induced a potent CD8 T cell response, characterized by cells expressing IFN-gamma and/or TNF-alpha, which persisted for the duration of the study.
CONCLUSIONS: Vaccination with AERAS-402 is safe and immunogenic in healthy adults. The immunity induced by the vaccine appears promising: polyfunctional T cells are thought to be important for protection against intracellular pathogens like M. tuberculosis, while evidence is accumulating that CD8 T cells are also important. AERAS-402 induced a robust and durable CD8 T cell response, which appears extremely promising.

Pfizer verhoogt bod op Ratiopharm
Verzend De Amerikaanse farmareus Pfizer verhoogt zijn bod op de Duitse maker van generische geneesmiddelen Ratiopharm. Pfizer biedt volgens insiders 4 miljard dollar (2,94 miljard euro) voor het bedrijf van de familie Merckle. Dat is 300 miljoen meer dan het bedrag waarvan eerder sprake was.
Jeffrey Kindler, de gedelegeerd bestuurder van Pfizer, is momenteel in Ulm, het hoofdkwartier van Ratiopharm, om over de overname te onderhandelen, melden ingewijden. Kindler heeft al met een vijftigtal managers van Ratiopharm gesprekken gevoerd.
Maar er zijn nog andere gegadigden op de kust. Ook het Israëlische Teva Pharmaceutical en het IJslandse Actavis Group zouden op Ratiopharm azen. Een delegatie van Actavis reist maandag naar Ulm af om een concreet overnamevoorstel op tafel te leggen.
Ratiopharm is een van de grootste Europese makers van generische geneesmiddelen. In Duitsland heeft het een marktaandeel van 20 procent. Het bedrijf is eigendom van de familie Merckle. De familie moet de onderneming noodgedwongen van de hand doen om hun schuldenberg terug te dringen. Die schulden werden opgebouwd door stichter Adolf Merckle. De pater familias pleegde vorig jaar zelfmoord na het verlies van tientallen miljoenen euro's door erg speculatieve kortetermijnposities op de beurs van Frankfurt

Leiden, The Netherlands, March 7, 2007 - Dutch biotechnology company Crucell N.V. (Euronext, NASDAQ: CRXL) today announced it will receive up to USD$5 million from Rockville, Maryland-headquartered Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation to support the advanced development of the candidate AdVac-based tuberculosis vaccine.
