Goed nieuws over ASML
Intel litho strategy change could propel ASML, says report
Peter Clarke
EE Times
(06/16/2010 8:01 AM EDT)
LONDON — Lithography equipment vendor ASML Holding NV could achieve 100 percent market share with Intel Corp. at the 22-nm/20-nm manufacturing process technology node, according to analysts at Nomura in London.
The comments came after a visit by analysts to ASML Holdings NV (Veldhoven, The Netherlands) in which they were told that Intel's traditional two-suppler lithography sourcing strategy may be under review.
Under that system Intel typically qualifies two suppliers of scanners and then ramps volume with mainly one supplier, while giving some orders to the number two. This serves to keep pricing keen as Intel is in a position to switch orders to the alternative supplier. However, that qualification process at the leading-edge is becoming too complex and costly and so could be abandoned, the analysts said in a note.
At 32-nm, ASML's rival Nikon won the entire "critical layer" business at Intel, while at the 22-nm it had been expected that ASML and Nikon will split the Intel business (see ASML, Nikon to split Intel lithography business, says analyst).
The ASML management said it is confident that for Intel's next generation process, ASML should have a substantially higher market share, with 50 percent being the minimum and 100 percent being a possibility, the Nomura analysts reported.
Samsung, Toshiba and TSMC are also expected to make key lithography sourcing decisions in 2010, which will set the lithography market landscape for the next 18 to 24 months, Nomura said.

Japan book-to-bill climbs
Mark LaPedus
EE Times
(06/17/2010 2:06 PM EDT)
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Japan-based manufacturers of semiconductor equipment posted a book-to-bill ratio of 1.13 in May, up from 1.07 in April, according to the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan.
The SEAJ book-to-bill is a ratio of three-month moving average bookings to three-month moving average billings for the Japanese semiconductor equipment industry.
The three-month average of worldwide bookings in May 2010 was 106.186 billion yen ($1.17 billion). The bookings figure is 5.9 percent up the final April 2010 level and 308.8 percent up the May 2009 bookings level.
The three-month average of worldwide billings in May 2010 was 94.233 billion yen ($1.04 billion). The billings figure is 0.7 percent up the final April 2010 level and 142.1 percent up the May 2009 billings level.

Qualcomm hit by Icera allegation
Peter Clarke
EE Times
(06/17/2010 8:24 AM EDT)
LONDON — Mobile communications technology company Qualcomm Inc. could come under an investigation by the European Commission after allegations that it has used incentives to try and dissuade customers from dealing with U.K. company Icera Inc.
Icera (Bristol, England) has complained to the European Commission and the complaint is being investigated but is still in its early stages, according to sources.
Icera makes software modems and supporting silicon to provide cellular broadband in 3G dongles and handsets. Icera's adaptive modem technology is focused on 3G (HSPA+, HSPA) and 2G (GSM, GPRS, EDGE) cellular voice and data modem chipsets and firmware, with 4G (LTE) scheduled in the near future. Icera executes the entire modem in software on an Icera-designed application-specific processor.
The company, founded in 2002 and still privately held, has been competing against larger and more-established players such as Qualcomm and ST-Ericsson. Icera CEO, Stan Boland, complained about unfair competition from an unnamed rival during panel at a one-day conference in London in May organized by the Global Semiconductor Alliance. A fellow panelist that day was Michel Hardies, scientific officer for nanoelectronics at the European Commission. Icera has now gone further and made a formal complaint.
However, the exact nature of the complaint is not known. It is believed that Qualcomm has offered patent-related deals to some customers.
Icera declined to comment.
"We do note, however, the similarity between Icera's allegations and those in complaints made previously to the EU, which apparently failed to persuade the Commission and were ultimately withdrawn. We believe the new allegations to be equally meritless," a Financial Times report quoted Qualcomm as saying.

TSMC's May sales rise is lower than average
Peter Clarke
EE Times
(06/14/2010 10:01 AM EDT)
LONDON — Foundry giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) said its unconsolidated May sales were approximately NT$33.84 billion (about $1.05 billion), an increase of 3.5 percent over April 2010 and an increase of 38.3 percent over May 2009. However, the sequential month was on the low side compared with TSMC's historical May/April average over the last decade. This has varied between a contraction of 7.4 percent and growth of 23.4 percent. It has averaged 6.8 percent over the decade and 6.5 percent when the extreme high and low examples that occurred in 2001 and 2002 are taken out.
The low rise in May maybe a compensation for the significantly better than normal trend sales seen by TSMC in April.
TSMC's unconsolidated revenues for January through May 2010 totaled NT$155.7 billion (about $4.83 billion), an increase of 85.8 percent compared to the same period in 2009.
Consolidated sales from TSMC (Hsinchu, Taiwan) include those of U.S. subsidiary Wafertech. On a consolidated basis, net sales for May 2010 were approximately NT$34.82 billion (about $1.08 billion), an increase of 3.0 percent over April 2010 and an increase of 37.9 percent over May 2009. Revenues for January through May 2010 totaled NT$160.82 billion (about $4.99 billion), an increase of 84.4 percent compared to the same period in 2009.

3D-chips laten op zich wachten
11 juni 2010
