In uiteindelijke versie is de AUS superbelasting niet van toepassing op energiebedrijven. Wel op kolen en ijzererts mijn bedrijven. Ooorspronkelijk was het de bedoeling van Rudd dat ook zij de superbelasting zouden betalen. De trigger ligt 7% hoger dan in eerste instantie gedacht, de belastingvoet ligt met 30% lager dan de beoogse 40%.

HOUSTON (Dow Jones)--Shell zei dat productie binnen drie tot vijf dagen weer op het niveau van voor de orkaan terug zal zijn gekeerd. Het bedrijf heeft ook personeel geevacueerd en de productie van aardgas stopgezet bij zijn activiteiten in het zuiden van Texas vanwege de orkaan.

Op Shell's website valt te lezen dat het concern een equivalent van 32.000 vaten olie per dag is misgelopen door de weersomstandigheden.

Ook BP, Anadarko en Apache zeiden donderdag weer bezig te zijn met het hervatten van de werkzaamheden.

Nice to know there is one place where BP’s gushing oil leak is not blowing a hole – the group’s pension fund. Investment in BP’s own shares and debt being banned, the pension fund’s biggest holding at end-2008 was instead in rival, Royal Dutch Shell.

This is indeed fortuitous. Like BP, Shell produces a commodity the world needs and generates prodigious cash in the process – some $1.5bn in operating cashflow a month. Unlike BP, it is not forking out $100m every day to capture leaking oil, nor fighting for its reputation (and more) with politicians in the biggest oil-guzzling country on earth. Rather, Shell’s cash is going back into the business and shareholders’ pockets: all told, some $40bn a year goes on capital expenditure and dividends.

BP has returned to banks seeking additional short-term loans to help the energy group tackle growing liabilities following the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The new round of financing would augment the $20bn of cash and credit that the company managed to raise by the end of last week. BP could raise about $5bn, according to some people familiar with the talks.

But the company is having to pay more in margins and fees, the people close to the transactions said, noting that the balance of power had shifted to the lenders. Banks have grown more concerned in the past three weeks over the potential size of BP’s liabilities.

BP’s shares rose as much as 9 per cent on Wednesday, partly in reaction to suggestions by analysts at JPMorgan Cazenove that ExxonMobil could make a bid for its weakened smaller rival. Any such move would be scrutinised closely by the US and other governments even in the best of times. But following the spill, the US Department of Justice, which is considering filing criminal charges, has made clear that it will keep an even closer eye on what the affected companies do.

In letters dated June 23, the department told BP; Transocean, the US company that provided the rig; Halliburton, one of the contractors doing work on it; Anadarko and Mitsui, BP’s co-investors, that they must tell the government in advance of any actions depleting assets that could cover judgments against them, Bloomberg reported after receiving the documents through a Freedom of Information Act request.

In the letters, the Department of Justice noted that the groups each had “significant” potential liability burdens.

In de AEX was het grotendeels verlies wat de klok sloeg. Vooral zwaargewicht Royal Dutch Shell stond onder druk. Dit aandeel onderging een nieuwe koersdaling van 2,5%, na de voorgaande dag ook al flink te zijn gezakt. De druk op de koers leek verband te houden met geruchten dat Shell delen van het gehavende BP-concern zal gaan overnemen.

Kletsverhaal. Op het memo van een M&A analist van
JPMC ging de koers van BP als een raket (8%) omhoog, XOM deed het ook niet slecht met een klein plusje, maar RDS zakt sindsdien met ruim 7&.

RDS is te groot voor de AEX, wordt als contragewicht gebruikt zodat de schade elders bij bijv. fin.sector en staal beperkt blijft.

Crude oil fell for a fourth day in New York, the longest losing streak in seven weeks, amid concern the economic recovery in the U.S. and China will slow and curb demand in the world’s two largest energy consumers.

Oil slumped to its lowest in two weeks as Hurricane Alex weakened to a Category 1 storm on its path over northeastern Mexico and forecasters said it could be further downgraded to a tropical storm by tomorrow. China’s manufacturing expanded at a reduced pace for a second month in June, adding to signs the fastest-growing major economy is cooling.

Gasoline inventories rose 537,000 barrels to 218.1 million in the week ended June 25, halting a seven-week gain, according to an Energy Department report yesterday. Supplies, 3.5 percent above the five-year average, were forecast to decrease by 400,000 barrels, based on a Bloomberg News survey of analysts.

Crude stockpiles fell 2 million barrels last week to 363.1 million, partly on reduced imports, the Energy Department said. Distillate fuel inventories, including heating oil and diesel, climbed 2.5 million barrels to 159.4 million. That’s the highest in eight weeks.

U.S. fuel consumption declined 2.7 percent to 19 million barrels a day, the lowest since April, the report showed.

Shares in BP jumped 8 percent on Wednesday, helped by bid talk and optimism that the worst may be over for the stock as the company comes closer to halting the massive oil leak from its Gulf of Mexico well.

"BP is up on spill-over interest from the JPMorgan 'Fantasy M&A' note yesterday mentioning possible bids, but really it's just a squeeze after the falls," said a trader, referring to a research note which speculated Exxon Mobil [XOM 57.3999 0.1099 (+0.19%) ] could buy BP.

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries’ crude-oil output dropped from a 17-month high in June, led by a decline in Nigeria, a Bloomberg News survey showed.

Production slipped 157,000 barrels, or 0.5 percent, to an average 29.23 million barrels a day, according to the survey. Output by members with quotas, all except Iraq, dropped 122,000 barrels to 26.865 million, 2.02 million above their target.

AMSTERDAM (AFN) - Shell en ExxonMobil hebben een begin gemaakt met de verkoop van hun gasopslagactiviteiten in Duitsland. De verkoop zou 1 miljard euro kunnen opleveren, aldus bronnen tegen persbureau Reuters woensdag.

Volgens de bronnen hebben Shell en ExxonMobil documenten verstuurd om mogelijke kopers te paaien. UBS adviseert de oliemaatschappijen bij de verkoop van de gasopslagactiviteiten van hun gezamenlijke onderneming Erdgas und Erdöl (BEB). Geënteresseerde partijen zouden tot 30 juli de tijd hebben om hun interesse kenbaar te maken, aldus de bronnen.

De waarde van de gasopslagfaciliteiten van BEB die te koop staan, wordt geschat op 500 tot 700 miljoen euro. Daar kunnen nog enkele honderden miljoenen bovenop komen voor het aanwezige gas in die faciliteiten dat nodig is om de boel draaiende te houden.

Iraq’s $12.5 billion natural gas production venture with Royal Dutch Shell Plc may be able to start exporting the fuel by 2015 when output from the country’s southern fields meet domestic demand, the government said.
