Hoe goed het ook gaat. Aan de koers is het nog niet te merken. Al maanden geleden werden koersdoelen gegeven van 40 euro door de allesweters. Wordt tijd dat ze gelijk krijgen.

Intel, Infineon close to billion-dollar deal, says report

Peter Clarke
EE Times
(07/09/2010 8:03 AM EDT)

LONDON — Intel and Infineon are closing in on a deal to sell Infineon's wireless business unit to Intel for a price of more than $1 billion, according to a report in Die Welt. Discussions are said to have taken place this week in Munich with the focus being finding a price for the deal, the report said citing un-named sources.
Rumors that Infineon is looking to sell its wireless business unit have been running for several weeks (see Infineon asks bank to aid wireless sale, says report). The unit has several prestigious design wins in Apple products such as the iPhone and the iPad as well as supplying Nokia and Samsung, but conventional business wisdom is that unless business units are held for strategic reasons companies should shed those that are not competing in a top-three position globally. Meanwhile it makes sense for Intel to take a position in wireless to complement its microprocessor sales for mobile applications.

The two companies have met several times to negotiate over the last two weeks with the price of the mobile division estimated to be between $1.1 billion and $1.4 billion, the report said.

U.S. investment bank JP Morgan is taking the lead in the negotiations with law firms Gleiss Lutz and Freshfields now also involved. It is at the offices of Gleiss Lutz in Munich that the latest negotiations are said to have taken place, the report said.

Communications has been an Infineon technology strength for many years and the company has achieved design wins inside Apple's iPhone and iPad. However, the wireless marketplace is crowded and Infineon is smaller than Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and ST-Ericsson. This may have prompted Infineon to leave the market so it can focus on automotive and power semiconductors. Infineon has already divested its wireline communications IC business via a management buyout into a company called Lantiq.

The wireless division is now responsible for about one quarter of Infineon's sales revenue.

TSMC reports strong June sales

Peter Clarke
EE Times
(07/09/2010 6:51 AM EDT)

LONDON — Foundry giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) has reported consolidated net sales for June 2010 of approximately NT$36.33 billion (about $1.13 billion), an increase of 4.4 percent over May 2010 and an increase of 37.0 percent over June 2009.
The sequential growth was high compared with TSMC's historical June/May growth over the last decade. This has averaged 3.2 percent over the decade and 2.9 percent when the extreme high and low cases from 2000 and 2008 are taken out.

The better than average performance in June maybe a slight compensation for the below average performance in May. It also contrasts with UMC's slightly below par performance reported Thursday (July .

TSMC's unconsolidated net sales were approximately NT$35.11 billion (about $1.09 billion), an increase of 3.8 percent over May 2010 and an increase of 36.2 percent over June 2009.

Unconsolidated revenues for January through June 2010 totaled NT$190.81 billion (about $5.95 billion), an increase of 74.2 percent compared to the same period in 2009. Revenues for January through June 2010 totaled NT$197.15 billion (about $6.15 billion), an increase of 73.4 percent compared to the same period in 2009.

June sales show modest growth at UMC

Peter Clarke
EE Times
(07/08/2010 10:21 AM EDT)

LONDON — Wafer sales at the world's number two semiconductor foundry United Microelectronics Corp. were up both sequentially and year-on-year; but the growth was more modest than seasonal norms suggesting the climb out of the recessionary dip of 2008-2009 is starting to slow.
UMC (Hsinchu, Taiwan) reported net sales of NT$10,335 million (about $322 million) for the month of June 2010 up 2.4 percent on the previous month and up 25.5 percent from a year before. In contrast the year-on-year growth was 35 percent in April and 34 percent in May. More telling is that in June 2009 sales increased sequentially by 9.6 percent.

For the first half of the year UMC's sales were NT$56.46 billion (about $1.76 billion), up 68.7 percent from the equivalent period in 2009.

The year-to-date totals for May and April 2010 were 103 and 83 percent ahead of the same periods for 2009. Therefore UMC's first-half sales for 2010 provide another indication of an ongoing return to more normal growth as the comparative position unwinds.

The degree to which this more modest growth is company- or foundry sector-specific will be seen when TSMC announces its June, and second quarter sales in the next few days.

Van Houten is comeback kid for Philips

Colin Holland
EE Times
(07/08/2010 5:35 AM EDT)

Frans van Houten, former CEO of semiconductor supplier NXP, has been lined-up to take over from Gerard Kleisterlee as President and Chief Executive Officer of Royal Philips Electronics on April 1, 2011.
Kleisterlee will retire from Philips on the same day and the appointment of will be proposed to the Philips annual general meeting of its a shareholders on March 24, 2011.

Van Houten is currently leading the project to separate ING Group’s banking and insurance operations as an independent advisor to ING’s management board.

He was a member of Philips’ board of management until September 2006 when he led the spin out of Philips Semiconductors and the creation of NXP Semiconductors as an independent global company.

Philips say he will re-join Philips on October 1, 2010 and will assume the position of Chief Operating Officer as of January 1, 2011, working closely with Kleisterlee to ensure a smooth transition.

"I am happy to see Frans return to our company," said Kleisterlee, "Frans was a strong member of my team and a strong contributor in setting the direction of the company. I regretted to see him leave with the semiconductor spin-out. Under his leadership Philips’ future will be in very good hands."

Van Houten started his career with Philips 1986 in marketing and sales at Philips Data Systems and became CEO of Airvision, an in-flight entertainment startup in the United States in 1992, and was appointed vice president international sales and operations of Philips Kommunikations Industrie in Germany in 1993. In 1996 van Houten joined Philips’ Consumer Electronics division for which he led the region Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, based in Singapore.

In 2002, he became co-CEO of the Consumer Electronics division and was appointed member of Philips’ Group Management Committee in 2003. In 2004, van Houten was appointed CEO of Philips Semiconductors and in 2006 joined Philips’ Board of Management until the spin out and creation of NXP Semiconductors in September of that year.

Since leaving NXP in December 2008 he was appointed an advisor to the ASM International NV (AMSI) management board in March 2009 for a period that was expected to last four to six months.

EUV litho sources improving, says workshop

Peter Clarke
(06/29/2010 8:14 AM EDT)
URL: http://www.eetimes.com/showArticle. jhtml?articleID=225701746

LONDON — Sources for extreme ultraviolet lithography are not yet sufficiently bright to allow commercial wafer throughputs, but they are improving sufficiently for beta tools shipping in 2011, according to participants at a workshop held in Maui, Hawaii.
"Although scanner throughput needs improvement, the remaining specs for beta scanners are expected to be met," said Vivek Bakshi, organizing chair of the workshop and president of EUV Litho Inc. (Austin, Texas). "Based on the present data, it appears that 40-watt sources will be available this year and 60-watt next year for integration in the beta scanners. These sources should provide sufficient throughput for beta scanners to allow chip-makers to develop processes for high volume manufacturing.

During the workshop ASML (Veldhoven, The Netherlands) announced it has received six orders for its NXE:3100 beta scanner, and plans to ship the first tool this year and the others in 2011. The first tool is expected to go to the IMEC research institute (see EUV litho keeps progressing, keeps slipping).

Jos Benschop, vice president of research at ASML, said his company is looking at multiple suppliers of both laser produced plasma (LPP) and discharge produced plasma (DPP) technologies for EUV sources for beta scanners. "EUV offers the best balance between cost, shrink and absence of design restrictions," said Benschop, in a statement issued by EUV Litho.

The attendees at the workshop also looked at other technical areas that require effort to prepare EUVL for high volume manufacturing. Obert Wood of GlobalFoundries Inc. (Sunnyvale, Calif.) listed these as mask pellicles, mask defect mitigation, mask flatness, and more precise targets for acceptable line-edge roughness.

However, discussion on EUVL sources dominated the meeting including details from supplier Gigaphoton of a source offering 104-watt power at intermediate focus. The company said it expects to increase source lifetime through improved thermal-load handling. The source currently offers 2.5 percent conversion efficiency, 7.9-kW CO2 laser operation, 20 percent duty cycle, 1.04 millijoules pulse energy at IF with a 100-kHz operation frequency.

Next-generation EUV sources are expected to have wavelengths shorter than the current 13.5-nm, according to several papers presented at the workshop.

Padraig Dunne of University College Dublin (UCD) spoke of LPP-produced terbium and gadolinium plasmas as EUVL sources with wavelengths of between 6.5-nm and 6.7-nm. If multilayer reflectivity at these wavelengths is low and higher power density is needed to produce the plasma at these wavelengths, another wavelength such as 8.8-nm may be a better choice, Dunne noted.

Invited speaker Kenneth A. Goldberg of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) reviewed research work on the mask defect inspection at various labs around the world.

Goldberg said the EUV wavelength penetrates deep into mask layers and for that reason is important to mitigate buried defects in multilayer EUV masks. He also noted that the current defect density at 30-nm needs to improve by a factor of 13. Longtime lithography consultant Chris Mack described the challenges of reducing LER, which he called "the ultimate limiter for EUV and 193i based lithography."

Lead times for some chips at 20 weeks, says iSuppli

Dylan McGrath
EE Times
(07/02/2010 1:22 PM EDT)

SAN FRANCISCO—Critically short supply of some analog, logic, memory and power management ICs is resulting in rising prices and delivery delays of "worrying lengths," according to market research firm iSuppli Corp.
"When lead times enter the 20-week range, they indicate a major schism between component supply and demand," said Rick Pierson, senior analyst for semiconductors and component price tracking at iSuppli (El Segundo, Calif.).

While supply constraints for components might not be a surprise amid the current market rebound, specific market and pricing trends are spurring varying degrees of short supply depending on the component market, Pierson said.
According to iSuppli, supply remains extremely tight for widely used analog and memory ICs, while some standard logic ICs and power management discretes such as low-voltage MOSFETs and tantalum capacitors are effectively on allocation status, meaning suppliers are unable to respond to un-forecasted demand, iSuppli said.

Lead times across the board are longer than forecasters indicated a month ago, iSuppli said. The lead time in June was 20 weeks for power MOSFETs and small signal transistors and 18 weeks for bipolar power devices and rectifiers, iSuppli said. Normal lead times for such products are about 10 to 12 weeks, the firm said.

Analog IC suppliers have been in a position to increase average selling prices (ASPs) for the past three months because of tight supply, iSuppli said. The imbalance is expected to continue through the end of the year, with lead times and ASPs expected to continue rising, iSuppli predicted.

Supply also remains constrained for capacitors and standard logic ICs, both of which have been swept by strong demand, iSuppli said. For standard logic ICs, allocation is continuing for the fourth month and likely to persist until the end of the third quarter, according to the firm.

In the discretes market, lead times have doubled since July 2009 and are expected to continue to extend through the end of the year, iSuppli said.

The situation is not as bad in memories, iSuppli said, expected future demand and inventory rebuilding efforts are being balanced off by currently soft sales as well as falling prices. But signs point to possible severe shortages in NAND flash during the third quarter, especially if suppliers are unable to achieve an optimal mix in production, iSuppli warned.
