Woodside Petroleum, Australia's second-largest oil and gas producer, posted on Friday a 10 percent decline in second-quarter output, but most investors are shrugging off the firm's short-term performance and focus on progress at its suite of LNG growth projects.
Output in the quarter ended June 30 fell to 17.5 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe), down from 19.4 million boe a year earlier, due to scheduled maintenance at its North West Shelf LNG plant and declining output in some mature fields.
Perth-based Woodside, 34 percent owned by Royal Dutch Shell said it continued to expect 2010 production in the range of 70 million-75 million boe, down from 80.9 million boe last year.

July 22 (Bloomberg) -- A tropical depression formed out of a low pressure system near the Bahamas today, on a track to take it across Florida and into the oil-fouled waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
The depression with maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour (56 kph), a step away from becoming the season’s second tropical storm, is expected to build strength as it bears down on the Florida Keys sometime tomorrow, according to a hurricane center advisory issued at 10:59 a.m. Miami time.
Forecasters are watching the storm closely to see what it will do when it enters the Gulf of Mexico over the weekend and if it will delay efforts by BP Plc to stem and clean up the worst oil spill in U.S. history. BP will wait for a favorable weather window to continue work on a relief well, Senior Vice President Kent Wells said on a conference call yesterday.

As the European Union prepares to prove to the world how solid its banks are, new data from around the euro area show that its weaker members' dependence on the European Central Bank has never been higher.
The latest data from central banks underline how negative sentiment toward some European banks has become: Banks in Portugal, Ireland, Greece and—most of all—Spain increased their borrowings from the ECB to record levels in June as more institutions found their access to wholesale money markets barred.
As such, ECB lending to the banking systems of Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain rose by €126 billion ($162.45 billion) in the first half of the year, accounting for almost all of an overall increase of €141 billion. Overall ECB lending volumes have fallen since June, with the repayment of €442 billion in 12-month funds. But by the end of June, these four countries accounted for 42% of the ECB's total lending of €870 billion, up from 33% at the start of the year. By contrast, those countries contribute only 13% of the ECB's capital.

July 22 (Bloomberg) -- Exxon Mobil Corp., Royal Dutch Shell Plc and two other oil companies will spend $1 billion to research and build a containment system to handle deep- water oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico.
Exxon, Shell, Chevron Corp. and ConocoPhilips will each give $250 million to establish a non-profit organization, the Marine Well Containment Co., to produce and manage the equipment. The system will be designed and built over the next 12 to 18 months to handle spills of 100,000 barrels a day in waters as deep as 10,000 feet (3,048 meters), the companies said in a statement on Business Wire.
The oil industry has been criticized by lawmakers in the U.S. for being unprepared to deal with deep-water accidents, following the explosion of BP Plc’s Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20.

Crude oil rebounded in New York as the dollar weakened against the euro, reversing a price decline that followed a report yesterday showing an unexpected increase in U.S. oil inventories.
Oil had fallen as much as 0.5 percent after yesterday’s report from the U.S. Energy Department showed crude stockpiles climbed 360,000 barrels to 353.5 million last week. Analysts had predicted a reduction in inventories.
