June 16 (Bloomberg) -- Oil is set to surpass this year’s highs above $87 a barrel after breaching the 200-day moving average yesterday, a “major” chart resistance level, according to Schork Group Inc.
Crude, which reached a 19-month high of $87.15 a barrel on May 3 before tumbling as much as 26 percent, yesterday settled above the moving average for the first time in a month. Prices also cleared the middle of two Bollinger Bands, which plot support and resistance levels based on volatility, further boosting chances of a rally, according to Stephen Schork, president of the Villanova, Pennsylvania-based consultants.

June 16 (Bloomberg) -- Oil dropped from close to a one- month high in New York as a stronger dollar reduced the appeal of commodities to investors.
Oil retreated as the U.S. currency rebounded against the euro, limiting crude’s appeal as an inflation hedge. The euro fell as low as $1.2264 from $1.2332 yesterday.

BP Plc (BP:US) dropped 4.1 percent to $30.11. Bloomberg forecasts show the largest oil and natural-gas producer in the Gulf of Mexico is unlikely to pay a cash dividend in the second and third quarters, and credit investors are pricing in a more than 39 percent chance BP will default within five years, as it tangles with the Obama administration over cleanup costs and claims for the biggest oil spill in U.S. history.

June 16 (Bloomberg) -- Royal Dutch Shell Plc said it has restored output at its Forcados crude export terminal in Nigeria, which was shut because of disruptions by armed groups in the southern Niger River delta. The Forcados terminal normally has capacity for about 400,000 barrels a day.
Nigeria’s oil production rose to almost 2.1 million barrels a day last month from 1.75 million barrels a day in July 2009, according to Bloomberg data.
Shell is the operator of a joint venture in which the state oil company Nigeria National Petroleum Corp. holds a 55 percent stake. Shell holds a 30 percent interest, followed by Total SA with 10 percent and Eni SpA with 5 percent.

Natural gas continued its run of gains on Tuesday morning, touching a fresh 3½-month peak as the prospect of an active hurricane season and unusually hot weather buoyed expectations.
Nymex July natural gas gained 0.9 per cent to $5.049 per million British thermal units on Tuesday, having earlier touched an intraday high of $5.084.
The front-month contract has risen 27 per cent in the past three weeks, reversing an 80 per cent fall that saw it trade below $2.500 in September 2009.
Meteorologists are forecasting one of the most active US hurricane seasons on record this year, which could shut down natural gas production along the US Gulf coast. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently estimated the June 1 to November 30 season was likely to bring 14-23 named storms, with eight to 14 strengthening to hurricanes

June 14 (Bloomberg) -- Exxon Mobil Corp., Chevron Corp. and ConocoPhillips, the largest U.S. oil companies, will ask lawmakers not to punish them for the human and environmental damage inflicted by BP Plc’s oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Exxon Chief Executive Officer Rex Tillerson, Chevron CEO John Watson and James Mulva, CEO of ConocoPhillips, are scheduled to appear tomorrow before a House Energy and Commerce Committee panel examining offshore drilling safety and U.S. energy policy.

LONDEN (AFN) - Optimisme over het economische herstel en een zwakkere dollar deed de olieprijs maandag goed. De prijs van een vat ruwe Amerikaanse olie (van 159 liter) steeg in de loop van de middaghandel met 2,6 procent tot 75,65 dollar.
De prijs van olie krijgt al enige tijd steun van een licht aantrekkende vraag naar grondstoffen. Macrocijfers die bevestigen dat de economie aantrekt, stuwen de prijs verder. Maandag heerste optimisme onder beleggers na een meevallend cijfer over de Europese industriële productie.
Bovendien was de dollar maandag licht in waarde gedaald ten opzichte van de euro. Dat zorgde er voor dat de vraag naar grondstoffen extra aantrok.

Russia overtook Saudi Arabia to become the world's leading oil producer in 2009, while global oil consumption fell the most since 1982, BP has said.
According to the oil giant's latest Statistical Review of World Energy, Russia increased oil production by 1.5% in 2009, claiming a 12.9% market share.
Production in Saudi Arabia fell 10.6%, giving the country a 12% market share.
Global oil consumption fell by 1.2m barrels a day, or 1.7%, while natural gas use dropped 2.1%.
The world's oil production dropped by 2m barrels a day, or 2.6%, also the largest decline since 1982.
'Unconventional supplies'
BP also said that "global gas production declined for the first time on record", falling 2.1%.
"Production fell sharply in Russia (-12.1%) and Turkmenistan (-44.8%), driven by declining consumption - in Russia and much of the rest of Europe - and the availability in Europe of competitively priced liquefied natural gas," the report states.
The US became the world's largest gas producer, surpassing Russia, thanks to "continued expansion of unconventional supplies".
Global proven oil reserves increased by 700m barrels to 1.33 trillion barrels last year.
At the same time, the world's gas reserves grew by 2.21 trillion cubic meters to 187.49 trillion cubic meters.
