Canada’s National Energy Board may require oil companies to drill a relief well in deepwater Arctic exploration projects, the Globe and Mail reported, citing chairman Gaetan Caron.

The regulator is due to award exploration licenses for the Beaufort Sea in an auction that closes next week and needs to decide on regulations governing relief wells before companies can start drilling, the newspaper said.

Crude oil production held at 10.13 million barrels a day in June, a post-Soviet record that matches the revised figure for May, the Energy Ministry’s CDU- TEK unit said in an e-mailed statement today.

Production increased 2.4 percent from June last year, according to the preliminary data. Exports dropped 4.1 percent from last month and 4.2 percent from a year earlier.

“It is difficult to gauge the trend by one month, but so far we can say that Russia’s oil output is flat at plateau,” Alexander Bespalov, an oil analyst with Moscow-based Alfa Bank, said by phone today. “Most likely output will be flat this year and will afterward depend on greenfield development.”

Natural-gas output dropped 10 percent from May to 1.49 billion cubic meters a day in line with seasonal trends and after OAO Gazprom, Russia’s gas export monopoly, said demand in southern Europe dropped.

Compared with June 2009, when demand was hit by the global economic crisis, production rose 22 percent.

Saudi Arabia has stopped exploring for oil to protect the interests of future generations, the Saudi News Agency reported, citing King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz.

The monarch told Saudi scholars studying in Washington that he had ordered that all prospecting for oil to cease “in order to keep the earth’s wealth for our sons and grandsons”, the Riyadh-based agency said.

I had a feeling once about Mathematics - that I saw it all. Depth beyond depth was revealed to me - the Byss and Abyss. I saw - as one might see the transit of Venus or even the Lord Mayor's Show - a quantity passing through infinity and changing its sign from plus to minus. I saw exactly why it happened and why the tergiversation was inevitable but it was after dinner and I let it go.
