As widely speculated previously on the pages of this blog, the SNB confirmed earlier it has lost billions of euros due to currency speculation in attempting to keep the CHF low. As the FT reports: "The Swiss National Bank on Wednesday revealed the cost of its massive foreign exchange interventions to restrain the value of the franc, with losses of more than SFr14bn ($13.3bn, €10.4bn) in the first half of this year." Following such a massive losses for the small country (nearly 2% of GDP) it was only a matter of time before the other 26 Swiss cantons, which share in the profits and losses of the SNB, said enough. "The SNB said last month it had stopped intervention. Its official reason was because deflationary risks from the surging currency had declined, but most economists ascribed the move to growing concerns about the risks from the massive foreign currency holdings." Yet it appears Switzerland has its gold holdings to thank for keeping the loss manageable, and why, at least the SNB, will not allow a quick depreciation in the price of gold, for as long as the EURCHF continues to be at these low levels: " the central bank was, as in the past, a significant beneficiary of the surging gold price, allowing it to take big paper profits from revaluing its large bullion holdings. The rising gold price allowed the SNB to “hold the loss within certain limits”, it said in a short statement." Elsewhere, we read that the Swiss economy is being aggressively liquefied with both M3 (up 7.7%) and loan issuance (up 4.4%) surging in June.

en wat 't nog zieker maakt is dat de (off)balans wordt opgekloot middels bijv fasb 1047 (oid), die opeens stelt dat je al je sjit mag marken at cost / to maturity. dan staat d'r 100% en 't is ergens tussen .04-.40 waard, niemand weet hoeveel precies want die markt zit op slot.
diezelfde sjit mogen ze bij de ecb over de schutting gooien alleen is dat t.i.j.d.e.l.i.j.k., zal wel even tijdelijk zijn als 't kwartje van kok, maar de ecb koopt die sjit niet, ze ruilen 't tijdelijk uit. bij de fed en fnm/fre etc ligt dat iets anders, die zijn lokoo geworden en kopen 't at face value op, in feite 'n enorme subsidie van main street aan wall street. staan de amerikaanse banken d'r dan beter voor? nee, want die hebben 'n nóg grotere exposure op nóg meer toxic sjit. bewijs wilt u? let maar op, voor einde jaar gaat de fed, los boggie, nog 'n keer met 3-5tr "verruimen".

ik zal 1x iets over die stresstesten zeggen, alhoewel ik me d'r doodt aan erger.
die testen zijn 'n wassen neus omdat ze niet melden wat wij hier gewoon heel simpel zien. ing heeft, na de emissie, max cr exp van 480-540 euries pa, of je wors lus. dan kan je nog zo geil aan de gang met tier-1 en basel-2 maar in de normale wereld ben je dan überpleite na 'n unwind zoals we die afgelopen paar jaar hebben gezien, niet gevolgd door 't hernieuwde oppompen van diezelfde bubble.
daarnaast komt die test vanuit dezelfde hoek die nou juist wordt gewantrouwd, alsof de slager z'n eigen vlees keurt.
tenslotte zou je zo'n test helemaal niet hoeven maken, die zou d'r allang moeten zijn en p.e.r. d.a.g. moeten zijn bijgewerkt, het bekende ECHTE value at risk.
het is een beetje 'n kruising tussen koossie t die €2,17 afboekt op amerikaanse sjit en 'n maandje later €30bn bij wâhtâh komt halen en noutje die zegt dat dsb liquide en solvabel is.

The Swiss National Bank's statement that it expects to post a CHF4Bln loss in 1H due to the Swiss franc's strength versus the euro reflects the political problem it faces in trying to manage the currency, according to Bank Sarasin. "The timing of the announcement was a bit surprising, but it probably wanted to get the news of the expected book loss out now while things are quieter," says economist Alessandro Bee. "Many politicians and members of the public don't understand why the SNB intervenes when the economy is running well," he notes. The book loss is in line with expectations, he says.
